With fundamental and practical knowledge being closely intertwined, another task of the IPA Hub—alongside its teaching and continual professional development duties—will be to advise and support institutions on preventing and reappraising the abuse of power and sexualized violence. The new research unit will continue, consolidate and expand the work currently being done by the Institut für Prävention und Aufarbeitung sexualisierter Gewalt (Institute for Preventing and Coming to terms with Sexualized Violence), which will be led by Mary Hallay-Witte until May 31, 2025.
“Sexualized violence often goes hand in hand with the abuse of power and authority,” says Professor Jochen Sautermeister, Managing Director of the Department of Moral Theology and future head of the IPA Hub. “So it makes sense to expand the focus of the IPA Hub to cover these forms of abuse in organizations and, specifically, the abuse of power in a university and general academic context. The IPA Hub will be tackling a huge challenge that people are only gradually becoming aware of and that the whole of our society will be grappling with for a long time to come.”
