Hilda, his sweetheart, is left behind to wait until such a time that Franz could send for her. After months of struggling in the new country, Franz finally gets a position as leader of an orchestra. He later writes a beautiful symphony, but is discouraged with the orchestra and finally gives up his job. Hilda fails to hear from Franz and goes to America in search of him. Days and weeks pass and still she does not find her lover. Franz is becoming melancholy, when he hears a beautiful melody being played on a violin in the next room.
