In this project, Chang employs mixed media strategies, appropriating newspapers, graphic displays, found images, and sculpture, to create an immersive environment with artworks that question how information is disseminated and consumed. Trained as both a lawyer and an artist, York Chang makes conceptually driven work which considers how collective action is influenced by ambiguity, disorientation, and propaganda. He employs strategies of collage, décollage, redaction and interlineation as interventions into information systems, often appropriating legal contracts, books, archives, documentary films, and newspapers for use in his projects. He works across media, and has presented performances, artist books, short plays, paintings, collages and drawings, among other activities. The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) and the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) recently presented concurrent solo exhibitions of Chang's work. Chang has also exhibited his work at various institutions, galleries, and art fairs in Los Angeles and internationally, including Commonwealth and Council, Greene Exhibitions, Samuel Freeman Gallery, Charlie James Gallery, 18th Street Arts Center, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, MassMOCA, and Edel Assanti in London. He is a California Community Foundation Fellowship Grantee and an 18th Street Arts Center Fellowship Grantee.
