The effects of PTSD induced by fighting in a war, physical injuries that led to using large doses of opiates, emotional strain caused by his squad leader committing suicide, and the loss of his best friend from a heroin overdose, all combined with his drug addiction, ultimately caused army veteran Shawn Livingston to lose all hope in life. He found himself homeless, cast out by his family, addicted to heroin, and facing a 20-year prison sentence. The story is told by following the treacherous adventure of Shawn's journey during the Pinhoti 100 mile trail race through the Talladega National Forest in Alabama along with the parallel story of his family's battle of living with his demons.
