It is in the keeping of the Widow Valdez at the time she dies leaving ...See moreFor years it has been the custom of the Valdez family, an old Mexican house, that an amber cross which is an heirloom, shall be the property of the head of the family. It is in the keeping of the Widow Valdez at the time she dies leaving two sons. One, Jose, the elder, who is betrothed to Maria, and Captain Guillermo Valdez, the younger, an officer in the army. To the captain the mother bequeaths her entire estate except the amber cross, which she wills to the elder brother. While attending the mother's funeral the young captain sees Maria, his brother's fiancée. They are mutually attracted and Jose in the bigness of his heart tells them to marry and be happy. A year passes and one day Guillermo is surprised to hear that Jose has joined the insurrecto's forces. Soon after a battle occurs and the brothers are each in command of opposing forces. Captain Guillermo is taken prisoner by the insurrectos and condemned to be shot. Jose, exercising his authority as commanding officer, permits his prisoner to escape, for which he is court-martialed and executed.
