While his more academically inclined brother Thomas of whom he lives with buries himself in work. Zachary feels as if something is missing from his life, of which his late parents had. A seek of adventure of love with similar interest. One typical weekend, he finds a spark of what he searchers for, another adventurer with her dog Trixie. Coincidentally they would be exploring the same 3-day hike the following weekend. Except on separate days, which could give Zachary the excuse to stay a bit longer. The following weekend comes around, and as Zachary gets ready his brother come to bid him farewell in pajamas instead of his typical work attire. His brother explains to him he gave him good advice and should try to explore the world himself as he is getting over a 2-year breakup. Before leaving instructions were told to Thomas just in case something were to happen he should call search and rescue after a certain period of time. Zachary and Murphy take off on their adventure. While traveling to the trailhead Zachary realizes that he needs gas, so he stops by a local gas station to fill up. In doing so he finds that there is a shortcut on the trail by the store clerk. Zachary and Murphy arrive at the trailhead and embark on their way. Along the trail there was scat from a predator, keeping them hesitant. Zachary finds the short cut along the trail, and they both take it. Coming to a ridge they see the campsite, which encourages him to trot quicker. When doing so he does not pay attention, and he trips and falls into a near old miners pit. Zachary falls about 20-30 feet (2-3 stories) injuring his leg in the process. His dog Murphy stands at the top of the pit, pacing in franticness. Zachary is now going to be faced with obstacles he must overcome physically and mentally for the next few days. In hopes his brother will do as he says and his mystery girl will come. Though life is at risk for both him and his dog, he continuously fights to get out of THE PIT.
