The Battle of Anzio, and the liberation of Rome which followed, is thought to be one of three major turning points of the Second World War that occurred in the summer of 1944. Over 12,000 soldiers died in the fighting at Anzio. Many of the quarter million men who survived the battle found it had been a turning point in their own lives, as well.
