When the patriarch of the Bitcherton family unexpectedly dies with his daughters both unwed, the Bitcherton women realize that should his death be made public they will lose their estate to their hated cousins and be left penniless. To buy themselves time to find suitable partners and insure their inheritance they decide to hide his body and lie to the town.
