But the discovery of archaeological sites in Colombia and Brazil revealing the existence of rock paintings dating back 12,000 years has shattered these preconceptions. A handful of scientists travel to the heart of the Amazon rainforest to study the traces of this lost Amazonian civilization. Drawing on archaeological finds unearthed in Chile, they reconstruct scenes from the lives of the first Amerindians, the wildlife they encountered and the landscapes they frequented. Finally, these archaeologists and botanists reveal what was a veritable civilization, with large towns and roads until the arrival of the first Europeans.
