The
Los Angeles Lakers are exploring options to strengthen their roster as they aim to make a deep playoff run this season. One potential move involves acquiring veteran forward
P.J. Tucker, a former NBA champion, via the buyout market. Tucker, recently released by the
Toronto Raptors, could provide the Lakers with much-needed depth and experience.
Why P.J. Tucker makes sense for the Lakers
P.J. Tucker, who won an NBA title with the
Milwaukee Bucks in 2021, is in his late 30s and not the same player he once was, Tucker’s toughness and versatility could still benefit the Lakers.
“One recent transaction from the Toronto Raptors could be what Los Angeles has been waiting for,” wrote Sports Illustrated’s Matt Levine.

Tucker hasn’t played this season and was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers before the NBA trade deadline. While he may not solve the Lakers’ center issues entirely, he has experience playing the position and could offer valuable minutes off the bench.
Tucker’s potential role with the Los Angeles Lakers
Despite being undersized, Tucker has always played bigger than his stature suggests. His defensive intensity and rebounding could provide a spark for the
Los Angeles Lakers, especially during the grueling stretch of the regular season.
“While Tucker wouldn't completely solve the Lakers center issue, he has played center in the past,” Levine noted.
“The veteran isn't the same player that he once was, but he could offer this group some decent minutes of rebounding and defense.”Tucker’s ability to guard multiple positions and his playoff experience could make him a valuable asset for a Los Angeles Lakers team looking to compete in the postseason. His presence would also allow key players like Luka Doncic to rest more during games, ensuring they’re fresh for critical moments.
P.J. Tucker could be a low-risk, high-reward move for the Los Angeles Lakers
At this stage of his career, Tucker is no longer a star, but his intangibles and championship pedigree could make him a worthwhile addition. The Lakers, who are desperate to maximize their current roster, could benefit from his toughness and leadership.
“The Lakers could throw Tucker into the fold for a few minutes at a time, giving other players needed rest down the stretch of the regular season,” Levine added.
