Abstract
A variable-reluctance synchronous motor connected to have a low inertia comprises a stator 2 having two parallel rings of mutually opposite magnetic tips 20, 21 separated by a gap in which is produced by means on the stator both a steady and an A.C. magnetic field in a direction parallel with the motor shaft 10, and a rotor 1 having secured to such shaft two non-magnetic support members 13, 14 which define a groove 19 in which are anchored teeth 15 disposed in the gap and formed by stacks of alternate magnetic and non-magnetic insulating laminae 16, 17. The tips 20, 21 comprise grain orientated silicon steel strip wound and cut to form U-shaped back to-back wires 26...29 carrying main windings 22 connected to be energized by a 3 pH supply to produce the A.C. field. Two exciting windings 23 or a permanent magnet create the steady field, which is closed through mild steel support members 24, 25. The rotor laminae 16, 17 are respectively of pure iron and an adhering glass-fibre loaded material, and in the other embodiment are tapes wound simultaneously into a ring shape, deformed to a wave shape to form the teeth, a thermosetting material is injected into the glass fabric laminae, and grooves are cut to receive the support members 13, 14. The teeth 15 saturate during operation, and the shaft 10 is non-magnetic.
