Abstract
The corrosive action of acid waters, containing at most 60 p.p.m. of alkaline earth metal cations, is inhibited by dissolving in these waters an alkali metal pyrophosphate which is at least dibasic in a proportion such that the pH reaches 7-8. The proportion of pyrosphosphate used may correspond stoichiometrically to only a fraction of the alkaline earth cations in the water, e.g. 10-30 p.p.m. of tetrasodium pyrophosphate added to water containing 20-60 p.p.m. of alkaline earth metal cations and pH 6-6.9. The invention also relates to compositions for use in the above process comprising a mixture of tetrasodium and/or tetrapotassium pyrophosphate and a dibasic alkali metal pyrophosphate, optionally accompanied by an alkali metal ferrocyanide. A soft water obtained by this process may comprise 20-60 p.p.m. of alkaline earth metal cations, less than 200 p.p.m. of strong anions, 10-30 p.p.m. of phosphate expressed as Na4P2O7 and possibly up to 10 p.p.m. of an alkali metal ferrocyanide, the pH being 7-8.
