Abstract

A flock-coated mat comprises a base sheet of plastics material having a surface provided with depressions in which the ends of the flock are adhesively bonded. The base sheet may be embossed with the depressions, or, in a modification, the depressions can be provided by spreading the adhesive on the base sheet and laying a mesh, e.g. open weave textile fabric, over the adhesive-coated base sheet. The flock, which may be of rayon, may be applied by electrostatic deposition to the adhesive-coated base sheet. The latter may be a vulcanisable natural or synthetic rubber composition, curing of the rubber being carried out after flock deposition. The adhesive may be based on a synthetic rubber (e.g. polychloroprene) latex of organic isocyanates. The base sheet may be made resilient and cellular by incorporation of a blowing agent in the rubber composition.
