Abstract
1106797 Making super-conductors SIEMENS SHUCKERTWERKE AG 27 Aug 1965 [28 Aug 1964] 37065/65 Headings H1A A5 and A4D Material comprising a super-conductor, twocomponent, intermetallic compound region is produced by disposing the lower melting point metal between two leaves of the higher melting point, sealing the edges of the leaves and heattreating to cause diffusion and formation of the intermetallic compound. In one embodiment a 10Á tin tape 1 is placed between wider 30Á niobium tapes 2 and 3 and the edges of the niobium are then welded by electrodes 6 and 7. Subsequent heat-treatment for 1 hour at 1000-1200C diffuses the tin into the niobium and forms Nb 3 Sn. Welding may be effected by resistance welding (using if desired, intermediate Ti or Zr layers), ultrasonic welding or electron beam welding and water cooled rollers may be employed to prevent heating of the tin. One niobium tape may be made wider than the other and bent over to enclose the tin, and the lower melting point metal may be a coating on the niobium or other metal. The metals may consist of Nb, V or Ta with lower melting point metals Al, Ga, In or Sn; reference is made to V a Si as a super-conductor and also to prior art processes in which Nb3 Sn is deposited on a support by reduction of gaseous chlorides of Nb and Sn.
