Abstract
1,116,197. Insulators. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 5 April, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 15663/67. Addition to 915,052. Heading H2C. An electric insulator comprises a rod or tube of resin bonded glass or other high tensile fibre having over at least a major part of its length a protective covering comprising a closely fitting sleeve of relatively non-tracking elastomeric polymeric material on which are secured, at spaced intervals along the length of the sleeve, annular bodies which increases the surface leakage path between the terminal fittings of the insulator, each body being of the same material as that of the sleeve or being of other relatively non-tracking elastomeric polymeric material compatible therewith. The sleeve and annular bodies may be P.T.F.E., neoprene butyl rubber, silicone rubber or other fluorocarbon polymers or copolymers, the synthetic rubbers preferably containing fillers, e.g. hydrated alumina, hydrated silica or mica flour. As shown, annular members 3 have flared portions 5 and unflared portions 4 which fit into grooves in sleeve 1 and are welded or cemented thereto. Preferably the flared portion 5 of one member 3 overlaps the unflared portion 4 of an adjacent member. The annular members may alternatively comprise discs or dishes (Fig. 5, not shown).
