Abstract

1,174,571. Electro-photographic developers. GEVAERT-AGFA N.V. Nov.4, 1966 [Nov. 5, 1965], No.47079/65. Heading G2H. Spherical or substantially spherical particles prepared by abruptly cooling droplets of molten ferromagnetic metal by a liquid medium, and which are optionally coated with another metal or a thermoplastic resin, are used as carriers in the development of conductivity and electrostatic charge images. The metal particles are preferably pure iron, or steel containing C, Ni, Mn, Mo and/ or Cr. The particles are preferably made by forming molten drops of metal using a gas/wire gun, cooling in a container containing an upper layer of water and a lower layer of a chlorinated liquid containing an anti-oxidant, mixing with tungsten trisulphide and heating in a reducing atmosphere. The resin may be cellulose nitrate, colophony or its esters, ethyl cellulose, hydrogenated rosin glycerol ester, a vinyl copolymer containing acid groups, or a polyamide or silicone, resin. An anionic or cationic surfactant (e.g. a nitrate salt of an amino amide, and/or an organic phosphate) may be incorporated in the resin or absorbed on the metal particles. The carrier particles may be used in conjunction with either toner particles consisting of an esterified colophony/ maleic anhydride condensate, nigrosine, pitch and tricresyl phosphate or toner particles which consist of metal particles which have been prepared in a similar manner to the carrier, and which may be coated with a resin (e.g. a polyamide resin, an epoxy resin, asphalt, or a heat-curable phenol-formaldehyde or a urea-formaldehyde resin).
