Abstract

1,185,923. Laminates. AMERICAN BILTRITE RUBBER CO. Inc. 12 June, 1967 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 26952/67. Heading B5N. A laminated flooring comprises a base sheet 12 of vinyl asbestos composition and a thin coating film 52 of vinyl resin attached to one surface of the said base sheet by a layer 54 of adhesive, the coating film being substantially in a relaxed condition. In a preferred embodiment, an ornamental layer 56 of pigment is provided between the adhesive and the film. The flooring is made by providing a continuous supply of a vinyl asbestos composition in web form 12, providing a continuous supply of a composite film 24 comprising a vinyl resin film and a layer of heat-activatable adhesive, spreading the film laterally e.g. by rollers 44 and 46 whilst maintaming it under substantial longitudinal tension e.g. by dancer roller 36, bringing the web 12 e.g. by means 58 to a temperature sufficient to activate the adhesive layer, pressing the film and the web together e.g. by rollers 16 and 18 with the adhesive interposed, maintaining the adhesive layer at said temperature, heating the resultant laminated material e.g. by gas flame or electric heaters 60 to a temperature at which residual stresses in the film are relaxed and supporting the laminated material e.g. by belt 62 whilst hot to prevent stressing of the film. Examples are given.
