Abstract

136,456. Goodwin, W. E. May 13, 1919. Stuffing-box joints.-A coupling for pipes, rods, &c., especially applicable for repairing pipes of refrigerators on ships, is constructed of a sleeve h of slightly greater diameter than the exterior of the two sections a to be joined, so that it can be moved longitudinally along the sections to secure the parts in the. positions shown in Fig. 1. A tight connexion is secured between the sleeve b and each sections a by means of a flanged nut c which screws on the exterior of the sleeve band compresses a conical packing d of woodite or other material when the nut is screwed up. In a modification, Fig. 3, the sleeve B is expanded to form conical parts B<2>, and the threads for receiving the nuts C are formed on enlarged cylindrical parts at the ends of the sleeve B, glands being used in addition to conical washers or packing- pieces. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 4689/90, 17509/97, and 10831/01.
