Abstract
1386714 Matrix displays SUWA SEIKOSHA KK 9 Feb 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 6512/73 Heading G5C [Also in Division G3] In a display device comprising liquid crystal material 16 between an analyser 17 and a polarizer 18 a phosphor layer 20 is added to improve contrast. The planes of polarization of the analyser and polarizer are perpendicular and the liquid crystal rotates the plane of polarization through 90 degrees when a field is not applied. Hence on energizing electrodes 21 . . 24 a dark pattern on a light background is produced when viewed from the analyser side. The planes may be parallel and a light pattern formed on a dark background. The electrodes 23, 24 on the polarizer may be reflective and an apertured insulating film placed over them. The device is used in a wrist-watch with COS-MOS driving circuitry.
