1410912 Angular position encoders COUNTING INSTRUMENTS Ltd 8 Sept 1972 [8 Sept 1971] 14030/75 Divided out of 1410911 Heading H3H For reading an electricity, gas or water meter, each of a plurality of drums of the totalizer of the meter has two coding bands having reflective and absorbing areas, one band having only a single reflective and a single absorbing area, each band co-operating with a pair of radiation receiving elements, the elements of each pair being angularly spaced around the axis of rotation of the drum by about 36 degrees. The elements may be fibre optics or photo-cells, all four of which may be on a single chip. Elements 36C, 36D may be spaced by more than 36 degrees to avoid ambiguity, the decoder (not described) accepting a 1 or 0 from 36D for numbers 3 and 8. If fibre optics are used, their outputs may be scanned as described in the parent Specification.
