Description
SPECIFICATION
An electric lamp
The invention relates to electric lamps the glass bulb of which is closed by means of a glass press stem and is provided with a base for which it is fixed without adhesive. In the past, lamps with a glass press stem have been used without a base as pin base lamps or the glass press stem has been provided with a box-shaped metal sleeve, matched in its shape the glass press stem, whereby the metal sleeve may be fixed by adhesives or by a clamping connection. The variety of lamp holders resulting from the different types of lamp base is an obstacle particularly to interexchangeability of lamp types. Thus for example halogen incandescent lamps, which usually have a glass press stem, are being used increasingly in those areas where up till now incandescent lamps without halogen additives had been used and which had a bayonet or screw base.Since halogen incandescent lamps usually have the above-described base shapes, an adaptor had to be used to fit it into a bayonet or screw holder. Since adaptors are very expensive, it is sensible to provide halogen incandescent lamps with bayonet or screw bases.
The invention seeks to provide an electric lamp with a glass press stem having a bayonet or screw base which is easy to fix.
According to the invention, there is provided an electric lamp comprising a bulb closed by means of a glass press stem and a base fixed without adhesives to the glass press stem, wherein a cap-shaped metal part is resiliently fixed to the glass press stem, a cylindrical base sleeve is pressed into this metal part and the current lead-in wires which emerge from the glass press stem, are insulated from each other, are being passed through the bottom of the base sleeve, and are soldered to suitable points to form base contact.
The cap-shaped metal part maybe provided with an opening corresponding to the crosssection of the glass press stem, into which opening two resilient flaps project, these flaps locking behind wedge-shaped projections located on the glass press stem. On both sides of these resilient flaps, spherical flaps maybe arranged to project into the opening. The spherical flaps may abut similarly spherical projections moulded on the glass press stem.
As a result a certain centring of the lamp in the metal cap maybe achieved. The base sleeve maybe retained in the cap-shaped metal part by a press fit which maybe brought about by appropriate broadening out of the upper edge of the base sleeve. It is advisable if this broadening is achieved at the cut edge arising during the manufacture of the base sleeve.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a lamp in accordance with the invention in side view and partially in section, and
Figure 2 shows the cap-shaped metal part of the base in plan view.
The electric lamp shown in Fig. 1 comprises a bulb 1 which is closed by means of a glass press stem. A cap-shaped metal part is fixed to the glass press stem 2. Thus the cap 3, as shown in Fig. 2, is provided with an opening 4 corresponding to the cross-section of the glass press stem 2 into which opening 4 project resilient flaps 5 which are bent downwardly. The flaps 5 lock behind wedge-shaped projections 6 moulded on to the glass press stem 3. Four spherical flaps 7 which also project into the opening 4 are arranged adjacent the flaps 5 and the press stem 2 of the lamp abuts against them with moulded and similarly spherical projections 8. As a result, a certain centring of the bulb 1 in the cap 3 takes place at the same time. The base sleeve 9 is retained in the cap 3 by a press fit.In order to achieve the press fit, the base sleeve 9 is provided with a broadened out edge 10 which may be formed at the cut edge which is formed when manufacturing the base sleeve.
In conventional manner, the current lead in wires are insulated from each other, one current lead in wire being passed through the base insulator 12, and being soldered to the centre base contact 1 3 and the other being soldered to the base sleeve 9 as a side contact.
1. An electric lamp comprising a bulb closed by means of a glass press stem and a base fixed without adhesives to the glass press stem, wherein a cap-shaped metal part is resiliently fixed to the glass press stem, a cylindrical base sleeve is pressed into this metal part and the current lead-in wires which emerge from the glass press stem are insulated from each other one being passed through the bottom of the base sleeve, and are soldered to suitable points to form base contact.
2. An electric lamp according to Claim 1, where the cap-shaped metal part is provided with an opening corresponding to the crosssection of the glass press stem, into which opening resilient and downwardly curved flaps project the flaps locking behind wedge-shaped projections which are located on the glass press stem.
3. An electric lamp according to Claim 2, wherein spherical flaps projects into the opening of the cap-shaped metal part and abut projections which are moulded on the glass press stem.
4. An electric lamp according to Claim 1
