Abstract

Dry processes of extracting metals; distilling alkali metals.-In the continuous gasification of solid fuel in an ash melting gas-producer, aluminous or silico-aluminous compounds may be added to give ,a slag constituting an aluminous cement, and low grade ores, wastes containing metals such as zinc, copper, tin, lead, silver, potassium or sodium or their compounds may be mixed with the fuel and the metals recovered either by condensation or from the slag, fluxes such as lime, carbonate of lime or fluorspar may be added to melt the cinder and remove sulphur from ores, metallic waste or residues which may be added to the charge. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a gas-producer having a container 3 for the melted slag with tap holes 5, 6 above which are blast tuyeres 7 extending from an annular pipe 8, and gas outlets 9 leading to a pipe 14 and dust separator 15. The gas from pipe 14 is burned in heat exchangers 17 and 17<a> and the air or oxygen is supplied by a fan 28 and preheated in the heat exchangers 17 and 17<a> before entering the producer by the pipe 25 and tuyeres 7.
