Abstract
286,603. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. March 5, 1927, [Convention date]. Artificial silk and like yarns.- A loose, continuous and untwisted band of artificial filaments, for example, comprising 50,000 deniers or more, suitable for working up by the usual textile operations, is made in such a manner that the process of manufacture is carried on uninterruptedly as between the spinning nozzles and the delivery of the cleaned and dried band to the winding device, the necessary treatments with liquid being performed by means of devices in which liquid is repeatedly injected into the band and is expressed from the band between repeated injections. The bundles B of filaments from a large number of spinning nozzles A after traversing the troughs C arranged in such a manner as by suitably inclining the nozzles and the direction of travel of the bundles, that all parts of their paths are accessible to the operative, are gathered into a band X and are temporarily collected on a reel E. In normal operation, however, the band X formed by the union of the several bundles, is passed over a suction and drainage trough H, by the side of which runs a traveller J moving with the same speed as the band, and on which stands the operative whose duty is to remove damaged filaments and to unite, when required, a new bundle of filaments with the main band. The band then passes to a washing and drying machine, after which it proceeds to a loosening apparatus Q and is finally wound up on a drum, reel or roller R. The washing &c. machine comprises a number of pairs of drums K, K<1>, around each pair of which the band is passed a number of times in helical fashion, the band being subjected to the action of washing, desulphurizing &c. liquids while traversing the vertical portions of its path. The drums are of large diameter and are preferably internally heated; and to compensate for the changes in length that naturally occur in the band during the several stages of the washing treatment, the diameters of the drums are varied, and the vertical portions of the band are put under tension by means of jockey pulleys or the like. It is preferred, however, to employ rails L provided with ribs N which open up the band in order to permit the penetration of the washing &c. liquid, preferably injected through passages in the ribs R, the rails then being tubes through which the liquid is supplied. The upper drums of each pair are adjustably mounted so as to enable the tension exerted on the band to be regulated. The several parts of the apparatus are under a single control. To put the apparatus in a condition for starting the spinning operation, an elastic thread is first threaded through the apparatus, from the winding device R to the reel E; the apparatus is then put in motion at a slow speed, and to the end of the elastic thread is attached the band of filaments which has been separated from the mass that has been accumulating on the reel E; the speed is then increased to that required for the normal operation of the apparatus. Specifications 121,734 and 163,312, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 263,727 are referred to.
