Abstract

527,873. Engines using liquid or gaseous fuel. PURDAY, H. F. P., REBBECK, F. E., and McCALLUM, N. April 22, 1939, No. 12125. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In a two-stroke engine working' with liquid-fuel injection and alternatively or simultaneously with gaseous fuel, the air-inlet and the exhaust ports are arranged at opposite ends of the cylinder to give uniflow scavenging. Fig. 1 shows an engine in which scavenging-air enters at A and exhaust takes place past a valve C, liquid fuel being introduced at F, and a valve for the admission of gaseous fuel being placed at D<1> or D<2> or between two air-inlet ports as at D When using gas only, the fuel valve F may be replaced by ignition means. In a modification, the air-inlet and exhaust ports are respectively controlled by opposed pistons in the same cylinder, at the side of which a gasadmission valve is arranged, either in connection with one of the fuel-injection valves, or with the air-inlet ports, or independently. Fig. 3 shows another engine in which the gas is admitted by a valve S<1> or S<2> either before or after the compressor V, to which air is admitted at T. In a multicylinder engine, there may be a separate compressor and gas valve to each cylinder.
