Abstract
540,328. Engines with opposed pistons in each cylinder. SELIGMAN, R. A. L. April 8, 1940, No. 6315. Convention date, June 2, 1939. [Class 7 (ii)] Opposed pistons work in triangularly arranged cylinders with a crank shaft at each angle. Each crank-pin is connected to two pistons in adjacent cylinders. The spur gearing between the three crank-shafts and the central shaft 5 permits the shaft 3a to rotate oppositely to the other two. Minimum clearance in the cylinder 1a is reached when the piston connected to shaft 3a is 10 degrees behind dead-centre and the associated piston 2a 10 degrees in advance. The piston 2b attached to crank-shaft 3b lags 20 degrees behind that attached to shaft 3a. As the firing period for the three cylinders is thus restricted to 80 degrees, balance is maintained by distribution in parallel banks of three cylinders, the firing order for an 18-cylinder engine being given.
