Abstract
586,065. Insulators. TAYLOR, TUNNICLIFF. & CO., Ltd., and COOPER, P. May 21, 1945, No. 12689. [Class 36] An insulator having a metal part secured to it by cement comprises a semi-conductive body, or an insulating body with a semi-conductive coating, and a layer of greater conductivity than that of the semi-conductive body or coating disposed between the body and the metal part. A ceramic insulator 1, Fig. 1, with a semi-conductive coating 2 of a ceramic composition, is attached to a metal pin 3 and a metal cap 4 by a highly conductive cement 5, conductive roughening 6 being provided to key the body to the cement. The cement 5 is such that a layer 4 mm. thick has a resistivity less than ten megohms per sq. cm. In a modification, Fig. 3, the space between the insulator and the metal parts may be mainly filled with a standard cement 7, the rest of the space being occupied by a highly conductive layer 8, which may be of a ceramic material or of metal applied by electro-deposition or spraying and connected, if desired, to the pin and cap by wires 9. In a further modification, the space between the insulator and the metal parts is wholly filled with standard cement, whose exposed portions are covered by metallic layers which connect the pin and cap to the semi-conductive coating. According to the Provisional Specification the space between the metal part and the insulator body may contain an alloy or a metal filling which is pressed around the body in powder form and fused to unite it with the body. Specifications 577,748 and 586,064 are referred to.
