612,005. Sets. NEWTON, E. P. (Telefonaktiebolaget L. M. Ericsson). May 15, 1944, No. 9296. [Class 40 (iv)] A telephone instrument comprises a base 5 having a supporting surface adapted to rest on a horizontal surface, an upstanding pillar 2 integral with the base and terminating at its upper end in a forwardly facing earpiece 3, a mouthpiece 10 at the forward part of the base, a dial 13 mounted in and accessible from underneath the base with the dial plate lying in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the supporting surface, a rear shoulder 16 formed on the base and extending laterally and rearwardly from the pillar 2 and side shoulders 16a continuing forwardly from the rear shoulder along the base on opposite sides of the pillar, the shoulders and rearward portion of the pillar constituting a saddle for the palm of the hand when lifting and holding the instrument in position for use. The dial plate may be replaced by a mounting plate for a push-button set. A switching button 11 is located in a central aperture of the dial plate and operates springs 12 mounted in a bottom plate carrying a holder 9 for the microphone 8 and provided with a peripheral rubber ring 7 clamped between the plate 6 and the casing. The rear edge 17 of the base may be straight and the rear surface of the pillar 2 may be flattened so that dialling may be performed with the instrument in. a recumbent position, Fig. 6 (not shown), and without manual support. The instrument may be associated with a wall support, Figs. 7, 10, having a flat shelf 18 and a supporting flange 19 to engage with the shoulders 16a, Fig. 8 (not shown), pins 21 arranged to hold the instrument in a convenient dialling position and a recess 20 in which the instrument can be supported from the earpiece 3 during a call. The switching button 11 may be replaced by a plate or disc connected to the contact springs 12, and a base or plinth may be provided for supporting the instrument in the upright position without engaging the button 11 or equivalent plate to actuate the springs 12.
