Abstract
In a method of producing sintered steel by pressing bodies of iron powder, the pressed body is gas carburized at 800 DEG -1000 DEG C., the partial pressure of the carburizing gas being variably controlled to adjust the carbon content of the steel, and then sintered at 1050 DEG -1300 DEG C. Iron powder may be pressed at 3 to 4 tons per sq. in., gas carburized by heating to 800 DEG -1000 DEG C. in an atmosphere obtained by the partial combustion of propane or illuminating gas or producer gas, and finally sintered at a higher temperature. The article may be subjected to a second pressing, which may be a hot pressing, at 6-10 tons per sq. in. after carburizing and before sintering. Alloyed iron powders may also be treated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of hydrogen to which propane or CO has been added. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
