Abstract
686,328. Delivering measured quantities of liquids, THERMOCONTROL INSTALLATIONS CO., Ltd. May 28, 1951 [May 26, 1950; Sept. 4, 1950]. Nos. 13370/50 and 21790/50. Class 106 (v). A device for delivering a measured quantity of liquid comprises a hollow stem 4 fitted in an inverted bottle or other container by a cork 5, a port or ports 12 in the stem, a container 3 slidable on the stem and having a removable partition 34 and a depending sleeve 9, and a discharge valve formed by the nozzle 32 of the container and the bottom of the stem. In the normal position of the container, liquid flows through the ports 12 into the measuring chamber below the partition and also collects above the partition until it covers the ports, the air displaced passing through a vent pipe 35. If the pressure in the bottle should rise owing to a rise in temperature, some additional liquid may flow into the expansion chamber through the vent pipe and collect above the partition. To discharge the measuring chamber, a lever 19 pivoted on a holder clamped to the stem at 6 is moved sideways by the receptacle and, through pins 23 engaged by a forked member 22, the container is moved downwards so that the discharge valve is opened, the ports 12 are shrouded by the sleeve 9 and a recess 25 and port 24 are uncovered so that air may enter from outside. The liquid above the partition is trapped, since the partition is a close fit on the stem, but, on return of the container to the charging position, it mingles with the new charge entering through the ports 12 and it is therefore not static but is changed each time the device is operated. The discharge valve may have a cork seat 41 fitted as shown or the cork seat may be located some distance within the stem and seal against the top of a tubular element formed within. the nozzle 32 and providing an annular recess to accommodate the end of the stem. The partition may be shaped as shown or may comprise a thin-walled shell with a concave upper face and depending flanges to fit the container and the stem. To vary the amount of liquid measured, the vent pipe may be adjustable in the partition and, to improve the liquid and air flows, the ports 12 are preferably on opposite sides of the stem and the latter is divided into two by a strip 11. The container, stem and partition may be made of transparent plastic.
