Abstract
A synthetic fibre soluble in water at a temperature below 50 DEG C. is composed of a copolymer, or mixture thereof with polyvinyl alcohol, the copolymer or mixture containing 2 to 10 mols. per cent of allyl alcohol and 98 to 90 mols. per cent of vinyl alcohol, and the copolymer being obtained by saponification of a copolymer of an allyl ester or alcohol with a vinyl ester. The fibre may be obtained by spinning an aqueous solution into a coagulating salt solution, e.g. sodium sulphate solution, or by extruding an aqueous solution through a spinneret into a hot gaseous atmosphere wherein the water is evaporated. In examples allyl acetate and vinyl acetate are copolymerized in bulk using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst, methanol is added and the copolymerization continued. The product is saponified with a methanol solution of sodium hydroxide.
