Abstract
768,684. Cylinder construction and cooling. ENGLISH RACING AUTOMOBILES, Ltd. March 16, 1955 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35254/53. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). A combustion chamber part including passages 23, 24 is formed as a separate unitary structure 21 clamped between a crankcase 10 and cylinder cover 36 as by bolts 45 running between the cover 36 and underslung crankshaft main journal caps 13. The part 21 has bosses 31, 32, which may support valve guides or themselves act as such, and two bosses 37, in line axially of the engine and receiving sparking plugs or fuel injectors, all the bosses having load-bearing upper surfaces mating with the cover 36 to which flanged rings 42 screwing into the bosses 37 retain the part 21. The cover 36 seals in the plane of inlet and exhaust passages 23, 24 on a crankcase extension 16 forming a water jacket for a cylinder barrel 22 integral with or screwed into the part 21 and having sliding bearing in the crankcase with interposed resilient packing 18, the extension 16 and cover 36 being recessed to fit around the passages 23, 24 with interposed packing 56. The cover 36, which in a multi-cylinder engine may be common to several parts 21, has casings for valve-gear 48. The cover 36 may be of magnesium alloy and the part 21 of aluminium bronze or, if unitary with the cylinder barrel, of austenitic or spheroidal-graphite cast iron. According to the Provisional Specification, the cover 36 may have depending portions secured to the crankcase by short bolts and forming, if desired, an outer casing.
