Abstract

768,753. Flexible mandrels. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Feb. 8, 1955 [July 26, 1954], No. 3678/55. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group V] A flexible mandrel for supporting the walls of a conduit during a reshaping, e.g. bending, of the conduit comprises a length of resiliently extensible mesh structure, e.g. wire mesh in tubular form, adapted to be stretched longitudinally, to enter the conduit, and to support the conduit walls when the tension is released and the mandrel tends to return to its original diameter. The conduit to be reshaped may be formed of ductile metal such as lead and copper which may be deformed cold. The flexible mandrel comprises a tubular mesh 1 of braided resilient tapes 11, Fig. 7, or of braided flat bands 3, each band comprising tempered steel wires, 2, Fig. 3, placed side by side. At one end of the mandrel the bands are gathered into a lug-plate 4 and at the other end may simply be terminated to avoid unravelling or may be gathered to a plate 6. The cross-section of the mandrel corresponds to the cross-section of the conduit to be bent, e.g. a rectangular-sectioned mandrel for a rectangular-sectioned conduit, but the mandrel has an outside diameter when unstretched larger than the inside diameter of the conduit. The mandrel may have an expansible cover. In operation the mandrel is pulled by a cord 8 into a tube 9 to be bent, and the pull on the cord is then released to allow the mandrel to expand to support the tube 9. The tube is heated, then bent and then allowed to cool to regain its normal rigidity. The mandrel is then pulled from the tube by the cord 8 or by a cord attached to the other end of the mandrel. The cord 8 may be replaced by a flexible pushshaft extending through the mandrel and engaging the end thereof. Alternatively the mandrel may be prestressed before insertion in the tube and may be compressed axially while therein to increase its rigidity.
