Abstract
<PICT:0778705/III/1> Oxides of Al, Ti, Si, Zn, Sb, Cr, Be, Zr, Co, Ni, B, Cd, Mo and V are prepared by halide hydrolysis by introducing the halide vapour under its own vapour pressure into one end of a cylindrical reaction zone and simultaneously injecting a combustible mixture of a hydrogen and an oxygen-containing gas tangentially into the reactor to burn to form water and hydrolise the halide. The preferred apparatus is shown in Fig. 2 and forms the subject of Specification 778,706. The refractory lined reactor consists of an inlet throat 54, a combustion chamber 56 and a reactor chamber 58. A plurality of inlet ports 60 tangent to the inner wall of the chamber 56 are supplied with the oxygen-hydrogen mixture form manifold 68 and the halide is injected axially from the nozzle 62. In order to avoid absorption of gaseous halide reaction products on the oxide produced, it is preferred to maintain the formed oxid above 600 DEG C. untid it is separated from the gases and to this end a further mixture of combustible gas and air may be introduced tangentially from nozzles 72 at the downstream end of the reactor. A finer size reaction product may be obtained by introducing supplemental air around the injector 62 either as a smooth flowing or whirling stream or outwardly around the periphery of the nozzle. The reaction products and surface areas above 50 square metres per gram, may be separated from the reaction gases by cyclones and the solids-free gases may be scrubbed to remove acids formed.
