Abstract

A composition comprises a major proportion of a polymer of an olefin containing up to ten carbon atoms in the molecule prepared by the low pressure process and a minor proportion of an organic phosphite of formula <FORM:0803557/IV (a)/1> where R1 and R11 are the same or different hydrocarbon radicals which may be substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl, or aralkyl radicals. Specified polymers are polyethylene and polypropylene while specified phosphites are tri-hexyl, tri-(2-ethyl-hexyl), trilauryl, tri-octyl, tri-(p-isopropylphenyl), tri-(p - tertiary - butylphenyl), di - (p - tertiary - butylphenyl monophenyl, tri-(n-octyl), tri-(n-nonyl), tri-(nonyl-phenyl), tristearyl and tricyclohexyl, phosphites. It is preferred that the phosphite is present in from 0.06 to 0.6 per cent based on the polymer, while known stabilizers and/or anti-oxidants, e.g. cadmium and calcium stearates, polymeric glycidyl polyethers and alkyl tin esters may also be present. The polymer may be milled at 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. with up to 1 per cent of the phosphite.
