Abstract

<PICT:0889259/IV (b)/1> Apparatus for cracking hydrocarbons, e.g. to produce acetylene, comprises a combustion chamber 5 joined by a Venturi tube 6 to a cracking chamber 7 which leads to a cooling chamber 9, the combustion chamber being provided with means to form a flame and an inlet for the hydrocarbon to be cracked a distinct distance from the centre of the Venturi 4. The numerals refer to the Figure in which lines 1 and 2 are for the introduction of the fuel and oxidant, and lines 3 for steam, if desired. The apparatus is preferably operated as described in Specification 889,258.
