Compounds of the formulae <FORM:0989554/C2/1> or <FORM:0989554/C2/2> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl 1-6 C at least one being alkyl and R is CH2OH, are prepared by addition of acetylene to the corresponding substituted geranyl-acetone, partial hydrogenation, halogenation cum allyl rearrangement, conversion into an aliphatic carboxylic acid ester having up to 6 carbon atoms in the characterizing group of its ester radical and hydrolysis. The compounds, e.g. mixed with known pesticides, may be impregnated into seeds and foods. Typical active compounds are farnesol, farnesal, farnesyl acetate or phosphate. The method can be used to grow especially large silkworm larvae.
