Abstract
A material for fine filtration, e.g. of aircraft fuel and gaseous products, comprises a fabric of natural or artificial fibres having deposited thereon a coagulated high molecular material in the shape of a three dimensional sieve with pores of a diameter of 0,3-3 microns, the number of pores per square centimetre being more than 106. The material may be manufactured by stretching a fabric which has been de-aerated, upon a horizontal smooth surface, applying a layer of a coagulating solution of a high molecular material, e.g. nitrocellulose or polyvinyl alcohol, by means of a casting device, and after coagulation of the material, the layer thus produced is dried in the stretched state to a constant weight and to the shape of a filter plate. The process may be performed continuously on an endless moving belt upon which the supporting fabric is carried after being unwound from a spool and which in turn passes through the individual operating stages, i.e. the removal of the air-bubbles from the fabric by means of a suitable liquid agent, e.g. acetone, applying the coagulating solution, accelerating the coagulation of the solution by the action of steam, water or similar medium, and finally drying the product to a constant weight and to the shape of a filter plate.
