Abstract
1336520 Cooling pistons BURMEISTER & WAIN'S MOTOR-OG MASKINFABRIK AF 1971 AS 22 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 49273/71 Heading F2T A piston comprises a crown I having drilled coolant ducts 13 extending radially adjacent the gas face 9 from a central chamber 12 and communicating at their radially outer ends with drilled coolant ducts 14 extending axially behind the piston ring grooves in a skirt portion 7 and opening at their lower ends in an annular chamber 6. The crown is secured by bolts 5 to the upper end of a hollow piston-rod 3 having passages 17 leading from the chamber 6 to an annular passage 18 formed between the rod and an inlet pipe 16 therein. In use, coolant, which may be oil or water, is circulated from pipe 16 through chamber 12, ducts 13 and 14, chamber 6 and passages 17 to the return duct 18. To facilitate drilling ducts 13 and 14, the topmost corner of the crown 1 may be cut away during manufacture and, subsequent to drilling, closed by a welded-on ring 21, Fig. 2, to form a circumferential duct 23. In a modification. Fig. 5 (not shown), the annular coolant chamber (25) extends to the level of the topmost piston ring. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the lower part (27) of the skirt portion is made as a separate ring and welded to the crown.
