To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. CARR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Foot-Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to school desksand like furniture, and its object is to provide a new and improved adjustable foot rest arranged to permit of raising or lowering the foot board a desired distance above the floor according to the size of the scholar making use of the desk on which the foot rest is applied, and to allow of folding the foot rest and swinging the same into a vertical position between the standards of the desk and below the table thereofwhenever it is desired to dispense with the use of the foot rest or for other reasons.

For the purpose mentioned use is made of a foot board having side arms adjustably secured to standards, base bars adapted to rest on the lloor, parallel links connecting the base bars with the said side bars, and a brace adjustably connecting a base bar with a corresponding side bar to lock the parts in the adjusted position.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of the adjustable foot rest as applied to a school desk and in position for use; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a like view of the same and showing the foot rest in folded position; and Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the foot rest as applied to standards independent of the school desk.

The school desk on which the rest is applied consists of the usual standards or legs A and the table B supported by the said standards, and the foot rest consists essentially of a foot board C having forwardlyextending side arms D fastened by bolts E to the standards A at the inner sides thereof, as plainly indicated in thedrawings. The side bars D of the foot board C are pivotally connected by parallel links F, F with base bars G adapted to rest on the floor, and each of the base bars G is pivotally connected by a brace H with a corresponding side bar D by the use of a bolt I engaging one of a series of apertures D formed on the side bar D. Each bolt E is adapted to engage one vof a series of vertically-disposed holes A formed in the corresponding standard A, acc ording to the position of the braces H relative to the side bars D. The corresponding pairs of parallel links F and F are connect ed with. each other by cross bars F2, F3 so as to strengthen the structure. f

In order to adjust the foot board C a de? sired distance above the lioor to suit the convenience of the scholar making use of the desk, the side bars D are disconnected from the .standards A byremoving the bolts E, and the boltsI are disengaged from the side Vbars D and the braces H, and then the links gaged with the corresponding apertures D" and the braces H, to fasten the braces in position, thus holding the parallel links F and F in locked position relative to the foot board C and the base bars G. The terminals of the side bars D are now fastened by the bolts E to the corresponding apertures A to fasten the side bars D in place. It is understood that the apertures A and D are spaced apart proportionate distances so that the side bars D register with corresponding apertures A after the foot board C is adjusted the desired height from the floor by adjusting the braces H correspondingly, as above explained. The bolts E may be used as pivots for swinging the foot rest into a vertical position between the standards A and below the table B whenever it is desired to dispense with the use of the foot rest for cleaning or other purposes.

It is understood that the foot board C may be lowered to such an extent by adjusting the bracesV H correspondingly that the side bars D rest or contact with the base brace G, as indicated in Fig. 3, the foot board C then being is lowermost position, and when swung upward in this position,

as shown in Fig. 3, the foot rest takes up very litt-le room and is completely out of the way of the legs of the scholar making for the reception of the bolts E of the foot rest proper, and which is the same in construction as above described in reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

The adjustable foot rest shown and described is very simple and durable in coni struction and can be readily adjusted to bring the foot rest a desired distance above the Hoor according to the size or stature Vof the scholar making use of the desk at the time.

Having thus described myk invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A foot rest for schoolV desks and the like, comprising a foot board having parallel side bars projecting therefrom for attachment'to the standards of a desk, base bars adapted to Yrest upon the Hoor, two links pivoted to each end of the foot board and to each base bar, the Vlinks at opposite each base bar, and-means for adjustably pivoting the other ends of the braces to the side bars of the foot board.

2. A foot rest for school desks and the like, comprising a foot board provided with parallel side bars projecting therefrom for attachment to standards, said bars heilig provided With a plurality of apertures, base bars adapted to rest upon the :[ioor, two links pivoted to each end of the foot board and to each base bar, a brace having one end pivoted to each base bar, and a bolt passing through the other end of each brace and an aperture of a side bar of the foot board.
