Description
w. H. HAA'S,
HUE.
APPUCATION FILEDl APR. lll |917.
'Patented Sept. 18, 1917.
Quorum WILLIAM HENERY HAAs, oF RAUB, INDIANA.
HOE.
To all whom t may concern."
j Be it known that' I, ILLIAM- HENERY HAAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raub,- in the county of Benton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved hoe or other similar implement, and has for .its primary object to provide simple and easily operated means whereby the hoe blade may be adjusted to any desired angle with respect to the handle.
It is also another object of the invention to provide a gardening implement having means for detachably and adjustably connecting the implement blade to the handle so that a single handle may be used in connection with a number of blades of Vdifferent construction to be employed for various purposes. Y
It is also an important object of the invention to provide a very convenient and serviceable tool or implement of the above character which is exceedingly simple in its construction, as well as strong and durable,l and may be produced at relatively small manu* facturing cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the preferred embodiment of my improved hoe;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section; and
ferrule which is fixed in the end of the handle.
AReferring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the handle of the tool or implement which is preferably constructed of wood and may be of any desired length. This handle gradually tapers tov one end, and upon the smaller end thereof the metal ferrule 6 is securely fixed in any suitable manner. The wall of this ferrule, at its smaller end, is relatively thick and provided with the threaded bore, indicated at 7, said interiorly threaded end of the ferrule projecting beyond the end of the handle 5.- To this Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of thesmaller end' of the ferrule 6, a concavo-convex plate 8 is securely fixed.
1 9 designates the blade of the hoe or other implement, which, in the villustrated embodiment of my invention, is of substantially triangular form and is provided upon one end with the teeth 10. This blade is centrally provided with an outwardly pressed portion forming a concave-convex projection or protuberance 11. This projection is centrally provided with a relatively large opening 12 and the plate S has a similar central opening 13 therein.
In the attachment of the blade 9 in the end of the handle 5, the convex face of the protuberance 11 is engaged upon the concave face of the plate 8, and a bolt 11 is engaged through the coinciding openings 12 and 18 and threaded in the bore 7 of the ferrule 6. The head 15 of this bolt has a convex inner face 16 for tight frictional engagement against the concave face of the protuberance 11. This heads of the bolt is entirely disposed within the cavity formed by the projection or protuberance 1l and does not project beyond the face of the blade 9.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use, and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. It will be apparent that by means of my device, the blade 9 may be readily disposed in any desired angular relation to the handle 5 and then rigidly clamped and held in place by the adjustment of the bolt 141. A number of implement blades may be provided for use in connection with a single handle, said blades being interchangeable and capable of easy and quick connection to the end of the handle, or disconnection therefrom, as will be apparent.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a handle, a ferrule fixed Patented sept. 18,1917. Application med April 11, 1917. serial No. 161,367.
loo
upon one end of the handle and having interiorly threaded portion projecting beyond the end of the handle and terminating in a concavo-convex seat, an implement f blade having a concave-convex protuberanee formed therein, the convex face of Which is adapted `for engagement upon the concave seat on the end of the errule, said protuberance being provided with an opening, a bolt for engagement through said opening having threaded engagement in the ferrule to detachably securezthe blade in an angu- Copies of this patent may be obtained for vlarly adjusted positionsvvith respect to the WILLIAM I-IENERY I-IAAS.
