To all whom it may con cern Be it known that I, EDNA MAYHEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Bend, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bookstands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to reading stands and has for its object the provision of a stand designed to be placed at public gathering places of all kinds and containing a Bible which may be read by those having a moment or so to spare so as to improve their spiritual welfare.

An important object is the provision of a device of this character in which the Bible is placed and designed to be maintained in open position, preferably to display certain reading matter which might be considered more appropriate for the occasion, locality, or the like, means being provided whereby a reader may turn the pages without having access to the interior of the device.

Another object is the provision of a device of this character which has a book holding compartment covered with a glass of lens formation so as to magnify and thereby facilitate reading.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, highly eflicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the base which includes a plurality of feet, preferably four in number and designed to be bolted to the floor, as indicated at 11. His

ing from this base is an upright support 12 which might in actual practice be a pipe reinforced at its upper end, as shown at 13. Threaded into the pipe 12 is a second pipe or rod 14 upon the upper end of which is secured an obtuse angular frame 15 having closed ends 16 and formed at its side edges wlth flanges 17. By virtue of the threaded connection of the pipe 14 within the pipe 12 it will be seen that the height of the frame 15 may be adjusted to suit different requirements.

The frame 15 is adapted to support a book 18, which, for the purpose of the present invention, would be a Bibleand the book is supported in open position. If desired, any suitable clips 19 might be provided. engaging the edges of the cover whereby to insure holding the book in open position and against displacement upon the frame. The numeral 20 designates a magnifying glass which forms a cover for the book receptacle and which has its edges engaged by the flanges 17.

In order that the pages or leaves may be turned by the reader, one end 16 is formed with an arcuate slot 21 at the sides of which are provided guide flanges 22 within which is slidable a curved plate 23 for the purpose of closing the slot when the device is not in use. he plate 23 is of course provided with a little knob 24 or the like serving as a handle.

The numeral 25 designates a leaf turner which is formed as an elongated blade insertible through the slot 21 and formed with a handle 26 and with a guard 27 at the junc ture of the blade with the handle. This turner is connected with some convenient portion of the frame or stand by means of a chain or the like 28 so that it may not be removed.

In the use of the device, in actual practice, it is preferable that the Bible be opened to some chapter which might be considered ap propriate to the occasion or to the character of the place in which the device is located, it being even possible that some Bible student might be in char e to call attention to the device and possib y point out the aptness of the chapter displayed. By looking through the glass 20 one may read the text and by inserting the blade 25 through the slot 21 the successive pages may be turned. When the device is not in use the leaf turner 25 is suspended by its chain and the slot 21 is closed by the plate 23 to exclude dust and the like.

While I have shown and described the de vice as designed primarily for displaying a Bible it will be readily understood that it is equally well adapted for displaying a guide book or other book of information for travelers and others. It is also to be noted that while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changesin the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

A device of the character described comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom and longitudinally adjustable, a frame carried upon the upper end of said standard and designed to support a book, a transparent cover for said frame, and means for effecting a turning of the leaves from the exterior of the frame, said means comprising a blade memberhaving a handle and one end of the frame being formed with an arcuate slot through which said blade may be inserted for engaging the leaves of the book.

A device of the character described comprising a support, a frame of obtuse angular form mounted on said support and having closed ends, one end being formed with an arcuate slot and the side edges being formed with flanges, a transparent magnifying cover for said frame engaged by said flanges, said frame being adapted to support a book in open position, and a blade member insertible through said slot and engageable with the leaves whereby-to effect turning thereof.
