mounted pawl disposed to swing in a vertical plane out of the flat side of a door for iocling purposes and adapted to withdraw behind the surface of a door in operative position. I
Another object is to provide a worm gear actuating mechanism for such a pawl.
Another object is to provide a latch-key operated lock-bolt disposed to slide over such a pawl in looked position.`
Other objects will appear from the following description and appended claims as well as from the accompanying drawing, in which-- Fig, 1 is a fragmentary somewhat diagrammatic illustration in top plan view of a loch embodying this invention in operative relation to a sliding door and the amb of a railroad-car7 the jamb and door being shown in a horizontal section.
F 2 is a vertical section through the lock on line 2 2 of Fig. 3 illustrating the pawl in locking position, the operating or actuating mechanism being cut away.
Fig. 3 is horizontal section through the locl approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 2` illustrating the worm gear actuating mechanism in operative. connection with the pawl, F is a perspective illustration of the worin gear actuating mechanism in connection with the pawl7 and the latch-mechanism somewhat disconnected.
The sliding doors of railroad-cars, as a rule are mounted to slide over the outside of the car-body as illustrated in Fig. 1. the door being indicated at 5 and a door-jamb boing indicated at 6. The closing movementY of the sliding door is normally in the direction of the arrow 7 so that the rearedge 8 of the sliding door in closing position remains in slightly overlapping position in relation to the door-jamb 6. By providing a pawl 9 disposed so as to swing in avertical plane behind the edge 10 of the `jamlo 6, the door 5 is prevented from c moving fromits closed position.` A pin 22 is provided inthe edge 10 of the amb 6 over which the pawl9 is made to engage to prevent even a lifting of the sliding door away from the front-surface lof the side of the railroad-car. This pawl 9 vlis lmounted on a shaft 11 together with a Yworm gear 12 by which the pawl can be controlled in its swinging movements. A worm 13 operativeby a socket-handle 14 is disposed so as to allow an actuating of the worm gear and t pawl. from the front-side of the door. A latch-mechanism 15 is embodied in the lockstructure including a latch-bolt 16 which by means of the latch-key 17 allows a locking of the pawl 9 inclosed position.
A lock-casing 18 is recessed within the door 5 as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. This casing is formed as indicated at 19 to receive the pawl 9 in closed position, so that the side 2O of the pawl is disposed flush with the rear-side 21 of the door in such inoperative position of the pawl. As stated above, the pawl 9 is mounted on the shaft 11 together with the worin gear 12 `within the lock-casing 18. The set screw 23 serves to facilitate'a mounting and setting of the pawl on the shaft 11. The pawl and worm gear are in this manner mounted in the same level. The worm 13 is mounted below the worm gear and is providedwith a key-end 24 terminating below the front-side 25 of the door.- A hole 26 is provided in the front-side to allow an insertion of the socket-handle 14 over the key-end 24 of the worin-shaft. The latch-inechanism is mounted within the lock-casing with the lock-bolt 27 disposed just above the pawl 9 in the closing position of the pawl as indicated in Fig.
By inserting the socket-handle 14 into the hole 26 over the key-end 24 of the worm. the pawl can be'swung in a vertical plane back and forth into locking and into operative position.
lVhen the pawl is turned into locking position, the latch or lock bolt 27 can be moved by the key r17to shift over the pawl ments past the jamb 6 and also firmly locked to the jamb by the interengagement of the hook 28 to the pin.
Having thusfdeseribed my invention, I claimz- 1. In a freight-ear lock, a paWl mounted to swing in a normally vertical plane te extend out of the inner side of a ear door and adapt-ed to Withdraw to Within the body of the door in inoperative position, a ,gear mechanism in operative connection with saidpawl having key supporting means, by
2,'In a freight-ear lock, in. `combinationi with the jamb and the door of a freight-ear, a pawl mounted in said door to swing in a normally vertical plane to extend outof the inner side of said door so as to project bel yond the edge of the jamb when the door is in closed position, a pin in the edge of the said jamb, the paivlhaving a eut-out near its free end to engage over the said pin in lockingposition, a gear mechanism in operative engage-ment with said pawl and embodying a keysiipporting end below the outer side of said door b ywhich the pawl can be swung and operated, and a latehkey operated bolt Within said door disposed to shift over the top edge of the said pand when` the pawl is lin locking position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing` as my invention I have signed my name.
WILLIAM BABEKUHL.
