- EOLDABLE AND RO LLABLE TENT.
Application filed m 21; 1924, Serial No. 727,168. Renewed April 5, 1927.
' My invention relates to tents and more particularly to a tent whichcan be folded or rolled to a compact package which may be easily transported and set up whenever and wherever needed and which is insect proof; and the object-is to provide a tent which is simple in construction and which can be made as large or small as may be required. The tent is particularly adapted for use by tourists and others who want small tents merely for sleeping purposes and protection from insectsand which is comfortable in hot weather and which is provided with means for protection against rain or cold weather and which is so constructed that it can be collapsed and rolled into a small package so that it can be transported in an automobile or vehicle. 'Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to' the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. l is a perspective view of a tent constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a broken sectional view, illustrating the construction at the connection of a side wall to the roof or cover. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view on a small scale, illustrating the manner of folding. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bottom and border. Fig. 5 is a broken horizontal section, shoW- ing the construction of the side walls.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views. 7
The tent is provided with corner posts 1 which are set inside of the bottom 2.' The bottom 2 is preferably made of cloth which is treated with a substance for making the same water and insect proof. The material forming'the bottom is turned up to form borders 3 and folded about the posts 1 and attached thereto or to the side walls. The borders will prevent water from running in the bottom and also prevent moisture from rising from the ground up into the tent.
The side walls 4 and 5 may be all screen. I
The side wall 6 opposite the door 7 is made of screen but constructed with a strip of cloth 8 which extends the full height of the side wall and the screen wall sections are sewed or otherwise attached to strip 8, the object being to make the side wall foldable and the cloth-strip having a hinge'eifecth; The folding of the side walls v1s illustrated in Fig. 3; When the-sections and rolled. The entire four walls can then be rolled to a cylindrical form for transportation. The top or roof 9 ismadeof cloth orother material and maybe made water proof if preferred. The roof is en ported from two posts 10 and two bars 11w ichare hinged together at theirupper'ends and the lower ends are detachably connected to the posts 10, the posts 10 having sockets forthe reduced ends 12. As a means for pre' venting the supporting bars 11 from spreading, a spring 12 is attached to the bars.
It is apparent that any other suitable device may be used to prevent. the spreading of these bars. Whenthe tent is tobe'folded the barsll are removed. The roof will then drop down in approximately an angular position. within the tent wall. -The side walls can then be moved in as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In order to prevent the crimping of the wire screen about the posts 1, strips 13 of cloth or flexible material are provided and the vertical edges of sheets of screen are sewed or otherwise attached to the strips 13. This construction permits a neat folding of the tent so that the sides of the tent or vertical walls can be rolled up in substantially cylindrical form. In sewing the cloth to the screen, the edges of the screen should be folded, asshown in Fig. 5. The edge of a sheet of screen is folded upon itself and then the cloth is sewed thereto. o For bracing the tent suitable ropes or cords or cables 14, may be attached-to the corners and to suitable stakes 15.
Curtains or side Walls 16 are provided. These members 16 may be used as supplemental side walls in cold weather or rainy weather, and they may be used as shades by raising the lower edges to whatever height sunshine or rain.
For temporary use for dressing or other purposes, curtains 17 may be strung on Wires 18 stretched from post to post 1.
It is apparent that various changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts may be made Without departing from my invention. The uses of this tent are unlimited. For picnics or otherentertainments and outdoor uses, the tent may be used so that the occupant-s caneat and read and sleep Without being annoyed with insects.
What I claim, is,-
'1. A tent comprising a bottom composed of waterproof material provided with upstanding curbs, a frame composed of upright. posts set in the corners of said curbs and said bottom,a door for said tent forming a part of one Wall made of flexible and foldable material, the Wall of said tent opposite said door being composed of sheets of Wire screen and a strip of flexible cloth extending the full height of the Wall and connecting the sheets of Wire, the other Walls formed of bendable Wire screen, and a roof of flexible material adapted to collapse Within said Walls.
2. A tent comprising a bottom composed of Waterproof foldable material provided With upstanding curbs, a frame composed of posts set in the corners of said curbs and on said bottom, a door for said tent on one side thereof, a Wall opposite said door composed of sect-ions of Wire screen and a vertical strip of foldable cloth extending the full height of thewall and connecting. the vertical edges of said screen, the other Walls of said tent being composed of bendable Wire screen, vertical strips of foldable material about the said frame members connecting the vertical edges of said walls of screen, and a collapsible roof adapted to fold Within said Walls.
3. A tent comprising a bottom provided With upstanding curbs, a frame composed of posts set in the corners of said curbs and on said bottom, a door for said tent forming a part of one; Wall, a wall opposite said door composed of sheets of bendable Wire screen and a flexible strip of foldable cloth extending the full height of the Wall and for connecting the edges of said Wire screen, the edges of the Wire screen being folded upon themselves and said strip of flexible material sewed thereon, the other Walls of said tent being composed of Wire screen, a roof for said tent adapted to collapse Within said Walls, and strips of flexible material about said posts for connecting the edges of said Wire screen.
4. A tent comprising a frame having four posts, a door for said tent forming one Wall, a Wall opposite said door composed of bendable Wire screen and flexible strips of cloth extending the full height of said tent wall and attached to the edges of said Wire screen Wall and bent about the posts of said tent, Walls of flexible screen for the other sides of said tent attached to said cloth strips, and flexible strips of cloth extending the full height of the tent Wall and attached to said last mentioned'screen Walls and bent about the posts adjacent thereto and attached to said door Wall, said flexible strips of cloth forming means for protecting said screen Walls.
In testimony whereof, I set my hand, this 15th day of July, 1924.
