Definitions
- This invention relates to certain improvements in boots and shoes, and is intended as an improvement on the device for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 161,809, were issued to us on April 6, 1875.
- the improvement consists in the combination, with a wooden heel and shank, of a continuous insole extending from toe to heel, and having upon the narrow shank portion thereof two side flaps, which are bent under the Wooden shank and secured thereto by tacks or staples.
- B B represent the wooden heel and shank, having upon its upper surface the insole of the boot or shoe A A.
- the insole is continuous from heel to toe, and is secured to the wooden heel and shank by means of staples or tacks C' O.
- the said insole is also provided with two flaps, A, which are turned under and secured by staples or tacks to the under side of the shank B.
- This arrangement of the insole almost completely surrounds the wooden shank, adding greatly to its strength, preserving it from decay, and forming a firmer attachment for the sole, and, being perfectly smooth and in one piece from heel to toe, is more comfortable to the wearer.

kz'fzzesses. fizz/67220729 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MEYER AND HENRY FREIBURG, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOO TS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,621, dated August 10, 1875; application filed June 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM MEYER and HENRY FREIBURG, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots and Shoes; and we do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the invention is represented in elevation.
This invention relates to certain improvements in boots and shoes, and is intended as an improvement on the device for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 161,809, were issued to us on April 6, 1875.
The improvement consists in the combination, with a wooden heel and shank, of a continuous insole extending from toe to heel, and having upon the narrow shank portion thereof two side flaps, which are bent under the Wooden shank and secured thereto by tacks or staples.
In the drawings, B B represent the wooden heel and shank, having upon its upper surface the insole of the boot or shoe A A. The insole is continuous from heel to toe, and is secured to the wooden heel and shank by means of staples or tacks C' O. The said insole is also provided with two flaps, A, which are turned under and secured by staples or tacks to the under side of the shank B. This arrangement of the insole almost completely surrounds the wooden shank, adding greatly to its strength, preserving it from decay, and forming a firmer attachment for the sole, and, being perfectly smooth and in one piece from heel to toe, is more comfortable to the wearer.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe having the wooden heel and shank B B, with attached continuous insole A A, having flaps A bent over and secured to the under side of the said wooden shank, substantially as and for the purpose described.
