()ur invention relates to an extension table or the like.
The general object of our invention is to provide an improved form of extension table, which will be of substantially conventional appearance, sturdy and simple in construction, and which will permit theefieotive area of the table to be readily enlarged.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an extension table having a swinging leg, which may be folded up and housed beneath the table when not in use. V v
ther objects and the features of invention and advantage will appear as the specification proceeds.
In the drawing which shows,' for illustrative purposes only, a preferred form of the invention Fig. 1 is an isometric view of oneform oftable, parts being in extended position;
Fig. 2 is a broken away top plan view of the tableshown in Fig. l, the parts being in the position normally occupied when the table is notextended;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a table, the
parts being in the position illustrated in Fig. 2. In said drawing, 5 indicates a table top, which may be supported either directly upon rigid legs 66 or upon an apron or side rail 7 supported by the legs 66. A bottom panel 8 is preferably employed for forming with the side rail? a box-like compartment beneath the table top.
In order to form an extension table, Iprovide a hingedly mounted leg, which may be swung down into floor engaging position. In the form shown, the side 9' of the side rail 7 is extensibly connected to the table proper as by means of sliding arms 1010, which may be readily drawn outwardly and pushed inwardly. The extension arms:1010 may be connected to each other andto the table proper by suitable means, such as a pin and slot connection including an angular pin 11 fitting within the slot 12 sothat the extension members 1010 will be reasonably rigid when extended outwardly in a horizontal plane. An extension leg member 18 is hingedly connected tothe extensible part of the resemble an ordinary table.
table, for example to the frame member 9 so as to swing in a vertical plane. l/Vhen the extension leg is swung up into substantially horizontal position and the frame member 9 moved inwardly to the position shown in Figs. 2 and ,3, the leg member 13 will be supported out of sight in the housing beneath the table top 5. The table will then When the frame member 9 is extended into the position as shown in Fig. 1, the leg member 13 may be swung down into floor engaging position and may, if desired, be'latched in such position as by means of a swinging latch 14 to avoid danger of having the leg 13 kicked out of floor engaging position. With the leg member 13 in the position shown in Fig. 1, a tabletop extension leaf 15, which is hingedly connected to the table top 5, may be swung outwardly and supported by the frame mem ber 9 and the extension members 1010.
It will thus be seen that a table constructed in accordance with our invention may resemble an ordinary table of a certainsize when not extended, and when extended may be double its normal size and all parts will be rigidly and safely supported. The table may be of neat appearance either when extended, or when not extended, and the parts are of simple construction and are not likely to get out of order. 7 7
While the invention has been described in considerable detail and one preferred form illustrated, we do not wish to be strictly limited to the form shown nor to the details of topfa box like compartment beneath said table top, having a bottom wall, and side walls forming rails of the table; an extensible section separate from the table leaf and consistingof one wall of said compartment wall, the arms being slidable within thecompartment, the wall of the extensible section serving as a closure for said compartment and slidably connected arms secured to said 1 When in the closed position; and a leg hinged to said extensible section of the table, said leg sWin ing in a vertical plane whereby said leg may e swung up into a substantially horizontal position and housed in said box like compartment, and whereby saidleg may be swung down to substantially Vertical posi tion When said extensible part is extended, the extensible section serving to support the table top leaf and being operable independently thereof. 7
