2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in vanity cases and has particular reference to illuminating means therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved vanity case of simple and practical construction wherein an incandescent lamp is conveniently disposed for adjustment to operative position so as to illuminate a mirror, and mounted so that it can be readily removed and replaced.
Another object is to freely support a lamp socket for rocking movements .to operative and inoperative positions, and to utilize the lid ofthe vanity case to restore the socket to its inoperative l5 position when said lid is closed.
'I'he above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodigo ment of the inventive idea.
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of a vanity case constructed in accordance with the present invention, the lid thereof being shown open and the g5 socket and its lamp in operative position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view, partly broken away and shown in section, with the lamp in its inoperative position.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 2 3 of Fig.
2, the dotted lines indicating the operative position of the lamp, and,
Figure 4 is a transverse section on the line 4--5 of Fig. 3. Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing the vanity case is shown as comprising a housing or body 5 of rectangular formation to one end of which is connected the lid'6 carrying the mirror 1. The housing 5 is divided into front and rear compartments 5 and 9 by means of a partition I0. Said compartment 8 may contain a. powder receptacle II having a closure I2 hinged at I3. The rear compartment 9 is closed by a cover plate I4 removably supported on the housing so that the same may be lifted from its position thereon when it is desired to gain access to the interior of the compartment 9. At the forward end of the cover plate I4 adjacent the partition I0, said plate is provided with a rouge receptacle I5 having a hinged cover I5. Rearwardly of said receptacle, the plate I4 is also provided with an opening I1 having a reduced forwardly extending portion I8, and .in this opening there is rockingly supported a socket member I9 which carries a small incandescent lamp 20 disposed in juxta-position to the portion IB of (Cl. Zut-8.45)
the opening for movement from an inoperative position below said plate I4 to an operative position slightly above the same as indicated by the full and dotted line positions of Fig. 3, the lamp being illuminated in the latter position as will 5 appear in the course of the description.
'I'he socket member I9 is oval in outline and is provided with a screwthreaded recess for receiving the lamp 2li, and further has a contact 2Iv in its rear end by means of which current is supplied 10 to the lamp in the operative position of the socket member. To removably maintain the socket member I9 in its position mainly within the comf partment 9, but iwith its upper serrated surface 22 disposed above the plane of the cover plate I4 15 so that said surface may be engaged to rock the socket member, there is provided a support, generally indicated by the numeral 23, which preferably takes the form of a spring wire bent into U-shape with the intermediate portion of said 20 wire secured in any preferred manner to the bottom of the receptacle I5, and with the side arms 24 of the support extending rearwardly on opposite sides of the socket member I9 so as to engage beneath the pivot pins 25 projecting from 25 the ends of said member. The spring arms 24 thus exert a yielding upward pressure upon the socket member I! which, being slightly larger than the main portion of the opening I1, will at all times contact the undersurface of the plate I4 30 and be thus frlctlonally maintained in position. Should it be desired to remove the socketmember I9 for the purpose of replacing the lamp 20, the cover plate I4 need only be lifted and thesocket member removed from its engagement with the 35 spring arms 24 and thereafter replaced.
The compartment 9 of the housing is also utilized to contain two small dry cell batteries 26 disposed on opposite sides of the socket member I9, as seen in Fig. 4, with adjacent ends of said 40 batteries engaging a. contact strip 21 at the forward end of the compartment. At the rear end of the compartment there is also mounted a contact strip 28 engaged by a terminal of one of the batteries 26, and said contact strip 28 carries a 45 curved terminal 29 disposed adjacent the bottom of the compartment and adapted to be engaged by the contact 2| only when the socket member I9 is rocked about its pivots 25 to the operative position of said member, as indicated by the dot- 50 ted lines in Fig. 3. When said contact and terminal are thus engaged with each other a circuit is established for the lamp 20 to illuminate the same. With the lamp 20 in its operative position partially projecting above the plate I4, the lamp and its socket member are restored to inoperative position by a "closing ofl the lid B. When this occurs, the mirror 1 will contact the lamp 20 and force the same downwardly. thus yrocking the socket I9 about its pivots 25 until said lamp is wholly depressed below the cover plate I4. A suitable spring catch 30 at the forward end of the housing 5 is utilized to engage the free end of the lid 6 to retain the same in its closed position.
What is claimed is:
1. In a vanity case. a housing having a top plate provided with an opening therein, a lampcarrying socket of greater dimensions than said opening removably disposed within said housing with a portion of said socket projecting through said opening, resilient means within said housing constituting a support for said socket and acting to frictionally maintain the latter in engagement with edges of said opening, and means to light which said pivots freely rest and which constitute the sole support for said socket, said arms exerting a yielding pressure upon said socket to frictionally maintain the same in engagement with edges of saidopenins. and means to light said lamp when said socket is moved to one position of adjustment relative to said plate.
