Application August 24, 1940, Serial No. 354,083
3 Claims.
This invention relates to cutter dispensing containers for roll paper, and its general object is to provide a double cutter primarily designed for a container of the box type that is generally used for housing a roll of waxed paper, from. which a sheet is severed transversely by a strip cutter fixed to the container, and my invention not only includes a strip cutter having a serrated cutting edge for the purpose set forth, but also a blade cutter for severing the paper longitudinally, and the latter cutter is slidably mounted on the strip cutter for adjustment along the length thereof, with the result it will be seen that my double cutter is capable of severing the paper into sheets of any desired length and width.
A further object is to provide a cutter dispensing container for roll paper, that includes means for measuring the width of the paper to be cut.
Another object is to provide a double cutter dispensing container for roll paper, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and extremely efficient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container having my double cutter associated therewith and illustrates the slide or blade cutter in use.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one form of my blade cutter.
Figure 4 is a plan view of a blank from which the blade cutter is formed.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken through a slightly modified form of blade cutter.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that the container l is of the elongated box type for housing a roll of waxed paper, and the container includes a front wall 2 of a height, so that its upper edge terminates below the upper edges of the rear and side walls. The rear wall has formed thereon a cover 3 that is provided with a flap, and it will be obvious from Figure 1 that the paper is unwound from the roll by pulling the same between the flap and the upper edge of the front wall, when it is desired to sever sheets therefrom by my double cutter.
Secured to the front wall 2 along the upper edge thereof and being of a length substantially co-extensive with that of the front wall, is a metallic strip 4 having a serrated cutting edge 5 that extends slightly above the upper edge of the wall 2, and the strip is fixed to the wall 2 in the form shown, by prongs 6 struck from the strip along the length thereof. By that construction, it will be obvious that the serrated strip 4 provides a cutter for severing the paper transversely, when the paper is drawn along the cutting edge 5.
The cutter for severing the paper longitudinally is preferably made from a single blank of sheet metal, shown in Figure 4, and the blank includes a substantially elongated rectangular body to be folded along transverse lines 1 and 8 to provide an inwardly directed channel guide 9 formed on the lower end of a relatively short wall portion ID that is disposed parallel with a relatively long wall portion H, and the wall portions l0 and II are joined at their upper ends by a looped portion l2. The short wall portion ill in the form of Figures 1 to 4 has formed on one side edge thereof a tab l3 providing a handle, and the long wall portion II has a blade [4 formed thereon, and the tab I3 and blade I4 are arranged outwardly from and at right angles With respect to their wall portions, as clearly shown in Figure 3. The blade [4 is shaped to provide a lower horizontal beveled cutting edge l5 and a penetrating point l6 at the juncture of an outer inclined edge with the cutting edge.
In the form of Figures 1 to 4, the strip cutter is disposed on the outer face of the front wall 2, with the channel guide mounted about the lower edge portion of the strip 4 for slidable movement of the blade cutter along the strip, while the looped portion l2 overlies the upper edge of the strip for disposal of the long wall portion within the container and against the inner face of the front wall, so that the blade M will be arranged in the container for disposal of the cutting edge [5 thereof in the path of the paper as it is unwound from the roll. The tab I3 is disposed exteriorly of the container and is of course for the purpose of sliding the blade cutter along the length of the strip. By that construction, it will be obvious that the paper can be severed longitudinally by the blade M as it is drawn from the container, and when the desired length has been removed, it can be severed transversely by the serrated cutting edge 5.
In order to facilitate the severing of the paper in sheets of accurate width, I preferably provide measuring means that consists of numbered graduations on the outer face of the front wall, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
In the form of Figure 5, the strip cutter is disposed on the inner face of the front wall of the container, and while the blade cutter of this form is very similar to that of the form of Figures 1 to 4, it will be noted that the blade I! is formed on the short Wall portion [8 which like the short wall portion ID has a channel guide l9 at the lower end thereof. The channel guide I9 is likewise arranged about the lower edge portion of the strip cutter, for disposal of the short wall portion l8 within the container, while the long, wall portion 20 is disposed exteriorly thereof and the portion 20 has a tab 2| formed thereon. It will be obvious that the form of Figure 5 functions identical to that of the form of Figures 1 to 4, and in both .of the forms,'the blade will limit the movement of the blade cutter by engagement with the end walls of the container, thus preventing removal of the blade cutter from the strip. is
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readilyapparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims. 7
