Description
Feb. 17, 1942. A. WARD UNDERFEED' RIVETING MACHINE Filed Feb. 25, 1938 LQIUYD A. WARD I Patented Feb. 17, 1942 UNDERFEED RIVETING MACHINE Loyd A. Ward, Jackson, Mich, assignor to Tomkins-Johnson Company, Jackson, Mich., a corporation of Michigan 25, 1938, Serial No. 192,467
. Application February 20 Claims.
This invention relates to riveting machines and the like and more particularly to such machines of the underfeed type.
In certain types of riveting machines it is desirable that the upsettable memberbe automatically positioned on the anvil in proper alignment with the set to permit the work to be disposed over the upsettable member before the heading up thereof. The present invention contemplates the provision of a riveting machine or the like for automatically presenting an upsettable member for receiving the work, the machine being arranged to quickly, accurately and efliciently present and feed upsettable members as rapidly as may be desired, the upsettable members being fed to a position beneath th set and moved upwardly provide a riveting machine or the lik having a vertically reciprocable anvil wherein. the movement of the anvil is coordinated with the feeding of the upsettable members. V
A still further object of the invention is to pro- ,vi-de a riveting machine or the like ofthe char acter set forth having a movable anvil and coordinated rivet feeding and anvil movement, which is semi-automatically controlled.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following specification when taken with the accompanying drawing, in which i Fig. 1 is a partial vertical section disclosin the details of the construction of. the machine comprising the invention,
Fig. 2 is a section on the line II--II of Fig. 1, showing a detail, 1
Fig. 3 is a section on the line llI-III of Fig. 1, showing the feeding chute, and
Fig, 4 is a view similar to a portion of Fig, 1, disclosing the anvil and its associated structure in retracted position.
Referring particularlyto the drawing, the reference character I indicates a frame. Mounted for reciprocatorymovement in the frame I is a ram 2, to which is secured a set 3. Mounted follower 8 swingable about a pivot 9.
R5 acting hopper.
directly beneath the set 3 is a vertically reciprocae ble anvil 4 slidably disposed in an anvil guiding member 5. The anvil guiding member 5 is secured to a head 6 connected to the frame I in any suitable manner. Vertical displacement of the head 6 with respect to the frame I due to the upsetting thrust is resisted by a key 1.
The anvil 4 is shown in Fig, l in its uppermost or active position and is maintained there by a The follower 8 is moved upwardly about the pivot 9 by a cam l0 slidable in a slideway l l in the housing l2 and a portion of the head 6. The housin I2 is mounted on the frame I and also supports the pivot 9. The cam I0 is reciprocated in its slideway H by a piston l3 movable in a cylinder I4, the cylinder l4 being secured to the housing l2 in alignment with the slideway l l.
The anvil 4 has depending therefrom a rod 20,
the lower portion of which projects from the bottom of the head 6 and has disposed thereon a helical spring 2i held on the rod by a stop 22. Thus, the spring 2| acting against the stop 22 and the lower side of the head 6. continuously urges the anvil 4 downwardly. The rod 20 extends through a channel 23 in the follower B, as shown particularly in Fig. 2, and through a similar channel in the cam l0.
A horizontal feeding channel 24 projects through an opening 25 in the side'of the anvil guide 5 and at the opposite end communicates with a feeding chute 26, as shown in Fig. 3. The feeding chute may be supplied with upsettable members either manually or by an automatically A feeding plunger 21 is slidably arranged in a slideway 28 in a housing 29 securedto the frame I. Movement of the feeding plunger 21 in one direction is limited by the adjusting screw stop 30. Movement is imparted to the feeding plunger 21 bya rocker arm 3| 0scillatable about a pivot 32 mounted in the housing 29, and movement is imparted to the rocker arm 3| by a plunger 33 slidable in a slideway 34 in the housing 29. Openings 35 and 36 in the plungers 21 and 33, respectively, provide operating connections with the rocker arm 3|.
'In operation of the invention, a controlling device of the character disclosed in the copending patent applications of Harold A. Tomkins, Serial No. 53,404, filed December '7, 1935, and Harold A.
Tomkins et al., Serial No. 86,106, filed June 19,
1936, is employed, although other controlling devices may be used if desired. As shown, the anvil 4 has disposed thereon an upsettable member 40,
which may be a rivet of any desired character,
is connected to the cam It by a rods '43 and 4t 'andthe cam lower 8 a clinch nut, or the like. The work is disposed over the upsettable member 40 and the machine operated in a conventional manner to move the set 3 downwardly to upset the upsettable member 40 to secure it to the work. As shown in Fig. 1, the follower 8 and the cam Ill back up the anvil 4 to provide a solid foundation to the bottom of the head 6.
The control device disclosed in the aforesaid patent aplications is of the character wherein the move a distributing valve to air to the cylinder 14 from a the left end of the cylinder Hi to urge the piston I3 to the right. "The piston 13 piston rod 43. Thus, movement of the piston {3 to the right moves the cam 19 to the right, with the result thatdue to the action of gravity and of the spring 2| the follower 8 and the anvil t both move to their lowermost positions, as shown the anvil guide 5.
is ready to receive the channel 24.
The alignment of the anvil 4 with In this position the anvil 4 limiting the downward movement of the arm 39 of the follower 8. The stop 38 may be fixed or adjustable, as desired.
The piston I3 is provided on the opposite side 'As soon as an upsettable member has been deposited on the top of the anvil 4, the "extension 45 of the outer end of the and opens a push button valve 48 normally maintained closed by a spring 47 to exhaust air from the conduit 43 cating'therewith on of the port 49. results in the moving of the control valve (not the type disclosed in the applications, to admit compressed air from a source through the inlet 55 and the port 55 into the left end of the cylinder 14 to urge the piston 53, together with the piston Iii, to'the left. As H) moves to the left, it engages the folto cam the same upwardly about the pivot 9 and to lift the anvil 4, through the folthe cam an upsettable member from lower 8, to its uppermost or active position, as shown in Fig. 1. A new upsettable member 40 is then disposed in position to receive the work and to permit the upsetting operation to be repeated. It is preferred that the upsettable memguide 5 guide the upsettable members 43 and hold them in exact alignment to be acted on by the set 3.
spring 5'! bearing against a washer 58,
plunger 33 by a pin 59, to yieldingly urge the plunger 33 to the left to return the rocker arm 3! and the plunger 21 to their positions, as shown in Fig. 1. As the plunger 2? moves to the right, it permits another updown the chute 26 into sults in the retracting of theanvil t to its lowermost position, the disposal of an upsettable member 48 thereon, andthe returning of the anvil 4 to its uppermostor active position without any further manual control. It will also be clear that while the invention is disclosed as applied housings I2 and 29 are disposed. While this form of frame construction has been found to be Very desirable, yet it is to be understood that the limited to this particular form of arrangement. Also, equivalent lost motion constructions may besubstituted for that disclosed between the plunger 33 and piston rod M. For instance, the piston rod 44 could be employed to positively return the plunger to its leftward position rather thanthe spring 57.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is: 1.
