' for storage purposes.
It is a further object of the present invention to providea collapsible box which can be readily set up to act as a combined shipping and display device, in which a platform is provided for holding and displayinge the merchandise contained therein, the merchandise being readily removable therefrom for sale purposes.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a folding carton wherein a section thereof is inwardly foldable'to provide a platform positioned somewhat lower than the cover of the carton thereby providing a clearance for the display of articles thereon.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following disclosure thereof together with the attached drawings which illustrate certain forms of embodiment thereof. These forms are shown for the purpose of illustrating the invention since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although, it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a folding box made in accordance with the invention and ar-, ranged in operative position for display of merchandise (not shown) Fig. 8 is a plan view (partly broken away) of the box in folded position.
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fi 8, showing the box in another folded condition.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to the blank B (Fig. 4), the folding box comprises a bottom III, to which is hinged at II a front wall l2, to which in turn is hinged at I3 a display platform I4. Platform I 4 has hinged thereto at three sides as at I5, short flaps I6. Hingedly engaged to bottom member I!) at I I isthe rear wall I8 having hlngedly secured thereto at I 9 a cover 20 which cover is divided into two parts 2 I, 22, by a crease line 23.
The front flap 24 is connected at 25 to cover 20 and is provided with two slits 26 thereby form-, ing two tab members 24a for a purpose later on described. The two end walls consist of flaps 21 connected'as at 28 to rear wall member I8 and the front flaps 29 connected at 30 to the front wall member I2. The main portion of end walls 3| is connected to bottom Ill by crease line Ella and consists of three sections 32, 33 and'34 connected by crease lines 35, 36. Cover 20 is also v provided with a semi-circular or other tab 31 cutout from the cover member 2 l at 38.
Fig. 1a is a perspective view of said box in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1, but with the parts in partly collapsed position.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along lines 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed.
Platform I4 is connected to front wall I2 at I3, this connection I3 being substantially midway of the total height of frontv wall I2 and having suitable cut-outs 39 which connect crease line I3 with the full height edge 40 of the front wall As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, to form the box, the blank B is first folded along the hinge 0r crease lines I I thereby raising vertically the front wall I2. Side- wall flap members 21, 29 are thereupon tumed inwardly along crease lines 28, 30. The main end wall 3| is now raised along crease line 3Ia until the portion 32 is flush with flap members 21, 29. The second portion 33 of end wall member 3I is now turned downwardly along crease line 35, thereby securing the end wall in rigid condition. The platform I4 is now turned inwardly along the crease line I3, the flap members I6 acting as a support for the platform, and the platform at the same time acting as a brace against the members 33 of the end wall section 3i, and thereby securing the whole box in a rigid position. If the merchandise contained within the box isto be shipped, the cover 20 (Fig. la) will be closed over, with the front flap member 24 located outside the front wall I2, while the tabs 24a are located behind the front wall I2, all as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1a, and thus securely locking the box in its'closed position. If, however, tion, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the cover member 20 will have its portion 2| raised in line with rear wall member l8, while the portion 22 will be folded back upon itself at crease line 23, with the flap member 25 extending between the rear wall l8 and the flap member it of the platform l4, all as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3.
, When the cover 25 is folded as described above for display purposes, the tab a! will protrude upwardly, such tab carrying suitable printed matter and/or samples of the merchandise displayed in the carton on the platform.
From the foregoing it is seen that there has been provided a folding carton blank B compris ing a single sheet of material foldable to form a front side wall i2, a rear side wall It, a bottom Ill, and ends, the side walls l2 and is being hinged to bottom I 0, the front side wall l2 having an intermediate portion less in height than the end portions thereof. The panel it which constitutes the platform is hinged to this intermediate portion and is substantially coextensive in length with the front side wall l2, the panel M having flaps l6. Each of the ends of the box comprises an end flap 21 hinged to each end of the rear side wall I8, an end flap 29 hinged to each end of the front side wall 12, and an intermediate flap 3! hinged to each end of bottom ill, the intermediate flap. comprising the hingedly connected portions 32, 33 and the tab 34 hinged to portion 33. The flaps and the panel are arranged whereby, when the box is set up for use, panel [4 is disposed Within the box, its flaps 16 supporting it, and the end flaps 21, 2,9 are disposed between the two portions 32, 33 of the intermediate flap and are maintained in such position by panel l4.
Figs. -9 inclusive, disclose the invention in a modified form. In this form the box comprises the bottom member 50 hingedly connected at 5| to a front wall 52, and having a platform member 53 connected midway to the front wall 52 at 54. Slots 55 are provided to connect the midway fold line 54 to the full height line 56 of the front wall member 52. The platform member 53 is also provided with flap members 51 on three of its sides, these flap members 51 being hingedly connected at 58 to the platform 53. Front wall 52 is also provided with tab members 59 hinged thereto at 60. The purpose of these tab members 59 will be described later on. Rear wall member 61 is connected to bottom 50 by means of crease line 62 and to the cover member 63 by means of crease line 64. Cover 63 is provided Witha closing flap member 65 hinged to cover 63 at 66. Flap 65 is provided with'slits 61 thereby providing closing tabs 68. Rear wall BI is provided with tabs 69 hingedly secured to rear wall 6| at 10. The purpose of tabs 69 will be described later on. End walls II are hingedly secured to bottom 50 at 12. These end walls H are provided with diagonal fold lines 13 used when collapsing the box, thereby forming triangular corner members M and the central wall member 15. Platform member 53 may be provided with a series of perforations, such perforations being surrounded by a number of radial slits 11 forming rests and adapted to receive, for example, the base of electric bulbs 80 or such round articles as eggs, etc.
the box is to be used in its display posi-' The purpose of tabs 59,59 is to secure the same by means of glue or otherwise, to end wall members 1.4. Because of this construction, the ends of the box may be either outfolded or infolded.
