' ROLL PAPER CUTTER ATTACHMENT 1 Filed Dec. 12, 1955 j Kin UQnTor 4 rlgi. H Edwurdwawz Unite ROLL PAPER CUTTER ATTACHMENT Application December 12, 1955, Serial No. 552,311
2 Claims. (Cl. 225-39) This invention relates to a roll paper cutter attachment intended to be detachably applied to the carton in which a roll of paper is delivered for the purpose of cutting or tearing a length of paper drawn out from the roll contained in the carton.
This attachment is intended to be used by small consumers such as small retail stores or households who use only a limited amount of wrapping paper or waxed paper and who cannot afford to purchase a regulation roll paper and cutter. With this invention the carton in which the roll of paper is delivered serves as the roll holder and the attachment, which is relatively cheap and is removably applied to the edge of the carton, acts to sever the paper by tearing it over a sharp cutting edge of the attachment.
The invention provides various novel features of construction and arrangement as hereafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton having the paper cutter attachment applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the attachment removed from the carton, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the attachment on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 showing details of construction.
Like reference numerals refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The carton 1 in which the paper roll 2 is delivered is usually square in cross section and made of heavy cardboard. The carton may have a hinged top 3 or the top can be entirely removed for access to the paper roll. In either case when the top is opened one longitudinal top edge of the front wall 4 of the carton is exposed.
The cutter attachment has a clip portion having inner and outer lips 5 and 6 which are joined together at 7 by suitable means such as spot welding. This clip portion embraces the top edge of the front wall 4 of the carton and grips it securely with the lip 5 inside the carton and the lip 6 on the outside thereof. The lower edge of the lip 5 may be curled at 8 away from the wall 4 to facilitate the application of the attachment.
Both the lips 5 and 6 extend angularly upward from their joinder 7 and outwardly away from the carton forming body members 5 and 6 which diverge somewhat and at their terminals the member 5 has a downturned flange 5 and the member 6 has an upturned flange 6 between which flanges is located a cutter bar 8 with its upper edge exposed. This upper edge of the cutter bar 8 may be sharp or serrated so that paper may be torn or cut over it. The cutter bar 8 and flanges 5 and 6 are permanently joined together as by welding.
In use the carton 1 in which is the paper roll 2 is opened by swinging upward the hinged lid 3 or by entirely removing the top thereof thus exposing the upper edge of Estates Patet O the front wall 4. Then the cutter attachment is applied by slipping the lips 5 and 6 over the inner and outer sides of the front wall 4 of the carton which holds the cutter attachment in place ready for use.
The paper is then drawn off from the roll 2, which retates in the carton, until the desired length has been moved past the cutter bar 8 and then by a sharp downward movement of the paper it is torn or cut over the cutter bar. If the carton has a hinged lid 3, this lid may be allowed to drop down upon the paper which is drawn from'the roll 2 and its weight will not be enough to im pede' passage of the paper under it while the lid will prevent accumulation of dust on the roll.
The lid 3 resting on that portion of the paper which has been drawn out of the carton also serves as a brake to prevent the paper slipping back into the container and leaves the edge of the paper exposed where it may be readily gripped for the next operation.
The paper rolls and their cartons come in difierent lengths and the cutter attachment may be furnished of a length to fit between the ends 1 of the longer cartons. Then to accommodate the use of the same attachment on shorter cartons the inner lip 5 has notches 9 extending upwardly from its lower edge to the joinder 7 of the two lips and this permits one of the carton ends 1 to fit into a notch 9 so that the inner lip 5 straddles the carton end with one portion within the carton and an end portion of the attachment extending outside the carton as in Fig. 1.
With the paper cutter attachment of this invention the user buys a roll of paper in the carton in which it is contained. He then opens the top of the carton, leaving the paper roll therein and using it as a roll holder, and clips the cutter attachment onto an edge of the carton and the device is then ready for operation. Use of the carton as a holder eliminates the necessity of buying a complete roll holder and cutter and the cutter attachment may be reused indefinitely as it is of strong construction and does not wear out.
The invention is defined by the appended claims which are to be considered comprehensive of all forms coming within their scope.
I claim:
1. The combination with a carton having a wall with an exposed edge and adapted to contain a roll of paper, of a cutter attachment having clamping means for detachably connecting to the said wall adjacent the exposed edge of the carton and a paper cutter blade located outside the carton, said clamping means comprising an inner and outer lip spaced apart and grippingly embracing said wall, said inner lip having a slot between its ends extending up wardly from the lower edge of the lip for receiving an end of the carton.
2. A paper cutter attachment adapted to detachably clamp onto an edge of a carton comprising an elongated body made of two parts of sheet material longitudinally joined together between their edges, the two parts at one side of said joinder being spaced apart and adapted to clampingly embrace the edge of a carton and the two parts at the other side of said joinder having an elongated cutter blade thereon, the clamping part located inside said carton having a slot between its ends, said slot extending from an edge of said part in a direction toward said joinder and is adapted to receive an end of said carton.
